Restaurateur/Humanitarian Expands Program to Feed Hungry Kids to South Orange County Despite Recent Fire that Devastated Him

Not one to cave in to setbacks, Sir Bruno Serato has announced plans to expand his program to feed hungry children to south Orange County even though his restaurant, the Anaheim White House where he prepared much of the food, recently perished in a fire. Caterina’s Club, the nonprofit that Serato founded and named after his beloved mother, will start feeding approximately 200 children from the San Juan Capistrano, Rancho Santa Margarita and Aliso Viejo Boys & Girls Clubs starting April 14, 2017. A kickoff event is currently being planned.
“It’s hard to believe that right in the backyard of great wealth epitomized by the locally filmed ‘Housewives of Orange County,’ there exists a hunger problem,” said Serato, who revealed that his program will now be feeding some 2,200 children each day. “I’m delighted that Caterina’s Club is, once again, expanding its footprint and we will continue to do so until hunger is no longer an issue in our nation.”
Caterina’s Club was started in 2005 after a visit by Serato and his mother to the Anaheim Boys & Girls Club. There, she saw a 7-year-old boy eating a bag of potato chips and when she learned that the snack was all he had for dinner, she instructed her son to head back to the restaurant and feed the children pasta. He brought back pasta that evening and has done so daily for more than a dozen years.
Even when the program was at risk of extinction during the collapse of the economy, Serato mortgaged his home to keep it going.
The massive undertaking has earned Serato an international reputation for his humanitarian work. In addition to being a CNN Hero and knighted by the Italian government, he has graced the pages of People Magazine several times, appeared on countless national television programs including “CBS Evening News” and has been profiled in newspapers and magazines the world over. He received a humanitarian award on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, was honored by the Good News Foundation (LA female newscasters who offer financial grants to worthy causes) and received numerous proclamations, Man of the Year awards and other forms of recognition — all of which he has accepted to generate public awareness of hunger in our communities.
